Hummer will expand its product line-up with the new "Victory Red" limited-edition H2. This special edition will be available in SUV and SUT versions, and maintains HUMMER's trademark bold design and unmatched off-road capability. The exclusive models arrive at dealerships in February with SUV pricing at $66,030 MSRP and SUT pricing at $65,575 MSRP. The 2007 limited edition includes all the standard features of the H2, along with a unique Victory Red exterior, rear-vision camera system and uplevel premium appearance package. The package features body-color fender moldings and rocker moldings with an integrated assist step, and a lower-profile, roof-mounted light bar with integral lamps. Inside, the limited edition has new carbon fiber appearance accents. The rear-vision system features a 3.5-inch full-color display housed in the rearview mirror, which receives its picture from a universal rear-mounted camera. The display is in the driver's natural line of sight, and the slide-out display won't compromise a driver's traditional field of view or create distracting glare. The screen then retracts back into the mirror when the vehicle is shifted out of Reverse. In addition, the special edition has a heated windshield wiper system with warm fluid that removes snow, ice and debris, and a rear-seat DVD system with dual headrest-mounted viewing screens and wireless headphones. The limited edition also carries GM's five year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty and HUMMER's premium four year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Hummer Rubicon Trail Off Road

Hummer H3 Rubicon Trail Off-road : The midsize H3™s iconic HUMMER style and unparalleled off-road capability have earned it a prominent position in the growing HUMMER legacy, and extend the brand™s passionate following by making it accessible to a broader range of owners. For 2007, H3 receives a new engine: the Vortec 3.7L I-5 with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing. This inline five-cylinder engine offers an excellent combination of power and efficiency, delivering 242 horsepower (180 kW) at 5600 rpm* and 242 lb.-ft. of torque (328 Nm) at 4600 rpm.Unparalleled capabilityThe H3 packs trademark HUMMER capability into a midsize package. Compared to the H2, the H3 is 16.9 inches (429 mm) shorter in length, 6 inches (152 mm) shorter in height and 6.5 inches (165 mm) narrower. Roughly the same length as a midsize family sedan, H3 comfortably navigates city traffic and fits nicely in parking garages.Like all HUMMERS, the H3 delivers exceptional rock crawling and climbing performance. The H3 was engineered for off-road leadership among midsize SUVs. The heart of this capability is its electronically controlled four-wheel drive system. The system features traction control, underbody shielding, an optional rear locking differential and StabiliTrak stability control. H3 offers two tire packages, a Goodyear 32-inch, all-terrain tire and Bridgestone 33-inch off-road tire, both larger than those found on any other midsize SUV. Also available is a specific off-road tire for the H3X, an 18-inch 265/65R tire.Among its off-road credentials, the H3 can ford 16 inches (407 mm) of water at 20 mph or 24-inch (610 mm) streams at a 5-mph pace, climb 16-inch (407 mm) vertical steps and rocks, make its way through deep sand and race easily over sandy surfaces.H3™s more maneuverable size provides advantages, such as a 37-foot (11.3 m) turning circle, about the same as a typical compact car, making easy work of parking lot maneuvers and tight turns when off-roading. The 9.1-inch (231 mm) ground clearance and maximum breakover angle of 25 degrees (with 33-inch tires) both make it possible to clear large obstacles in off-road driving. Serious off-road performance is also aided by the maximum approach angle of 40 degrees and maximum departure angle of 37 degrees. These approach and departure angles permit the H3 to drive into a hole and back out again, without getting hung up in the front or rear. The H3 also provides the refinement, comfort and convenience required for enjoyable on-road driving as well. It offers premium options such as heated leather seats, a large electric express open/close sliding sunroof, a DVD-based navigation radio and numerous customized accessories.Iconic HUMMER designH3™s bold looks make it readily identifiable as a HUMMER. Features such as its wide track width, short overhangs and huge tires provide stability, outstanding ground clearance and quick rock-climbing capability in off-road driving. The H3™s flat, chiseled surfaces; upright windshield and windows; signature seven-slot louvered grille; round headlamps housed inside square openings; and pronounced fender flares are all pure HUMMER. Power and strength emanate from its cube-like metal billet form. The H3™s interior is inviting and modern, blending premium cues with world-class craftsmanship. Upscale touches include a perforated, leather-wrapped and stitched steering wheel and automatic transmission shift handle; bright-accented instrumentation; brushed, machine-finished trim plates; chrome door release handles; chrome bezel for the automatic transmission shifter; and a chrome H3 emblem in the center of the steering wheel.Safety, security and OnStarOnStar-equipped H3s will feature as an option (with the upgrade to Directions and Connections) a new service called OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation, the first factory-installed, fully integrated GPS navigation system from OnStar by GM. Turn-by-Turn allows consumers to talk to a live advisor, who in turn sends complete step-by-step directions to customers` vehicles through their OnStar system. These audio directions automatically play through the vehicle™s stereo as needed, triggered by the OnStar system™s GPS capabilities. This enables drivers to be led to their destination while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. For more information about OnStar, see the OnStar Overview in the Product Information Guide Corporate Book. The H3 incorporates structural enhancements and advanced safety systems to assist in crash avoidance and protection, including a reinforced passenger compartment safety cage that helps provide protection in the event of side and frontal impacts. The strong, rigid steel structure surrounds the passenger compartment, runs from the A-pillars to the roof rail, back to the D-pillars and includes the bottom rocker panels, under-floor longitudinals and frame. The all-steel body panels and exceptionally strong frame further help protect occupants in a collision. The fully welded, ladder-type frame optimizes crash performance, in addition to standing up to rigorous off-road requirements.Additional crash protection is provided by a standard frontal dual-stage air bag system. The H3 has GM™s Passenger Sensing System, which uses weight-sensing technology to turn the front passenger air bag on or off as appropriate. If the sensor system detects an unoccupied front passenger seat or the presence of a smaller occupant, the front passenger air bag is designed to automatically turn off so it would not deploy in the event of a frontal collision. Even with this system, GM strongly recommends restraining child passengers 12 and under in an appropriate child seat or, for older children, lap-and-shoulder belts in the second or third row of the vehicle.Optional roof rail-mounted, side curtain air bags drop down to the belt line to help provide head and rollover protection for the driver and front passenger. A rollover protection sensing system also helps protect occupants against impending rollovers by triggering side curtain air bags to increase the likelihood of occupant containment in a rollover event. Seat belt pretensioners help keep occupants in the proper position, reducing their likelihood making contact with the inside of the vehicle. End of Hummer H3 Rubicon Trail Off-road review.

H1 Alpha

Hummer H1 Alpha - New Edition: The 2006 H1 Alpha, featuring GM’s Duramax 6600 diesel engine, takes HUMMER performance to its ultimate extension and represents the single greatest advance in the 14-year history of the original HUMMER. Arriving in dealerships in early 2005, the H1 Alpha delivers more power, more torque, and enhanced on- and off-road capability, with significantly improved fuel economy. GM’s award-winning Duramax 6600 (6.6-liter) turbo-diesel engine and Allison 1000 five-speed automatic transmission give the H1 Alpha dramatic performance improvements and add to the H1’s legendary off-road capabilities.
H1 Alpha is the first in HUMMER’s new performance series. “Alpha represents HUMMER performance taken to its ultimate extension,” said Susan Docherty, HUMMER general manager. “That means improving HUMMER’s already-unmatched off-road capability, along with enhancements to fuel efficiency and driving comfort on the road. As the original HUMMER, the H1 is the perfect vehicle to mark the start of the Alpha series.”
As was the case for previous H1s, the 2006 H1 Alpha will be offered in both Open Top and Wagon models. The Duramax 6600 replaces the previous 6.5-liter Optimizer Turbo-Diesel, which will continue on as the power plant for the military HUMVEE, the vehicle on which the H1 is based. All commercial H1s produced for the 2006 model year will be H1 Alpha models. H1s used for fleet sales will use the Optimizer engine.
H1 Alpha marks another important aspect of HUMMER’s ongoing growth, as the brand introduces new models and makes significant improvements to existing models. The H2 SUT, a new version of the H2 featuring a pickup-style cargo bed, began sales in the summer of 2004. The all-new H3, packing authentic HUMMER design and capability into a smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicle, arrives at dealerships in the spring of 2005.
Alpha performance: best-ever H1
H1 Alpha is the highest performing H1 ever, with more horsepower, more torque and better fuel economy. The Duramax 6600 delivers 300 horsepower at 3000 rpm, a 46 percent increase over previous H1s equipped with the 6.5-liter Optimizer Turbo-Diesel. Peak torque is a massive 520 lb.-ft. at 1500 rpm, an increase of 18 percent.
The H1 Alpha’s increased power makes its already-extreme off-road crawling and climbing ability more potent. On the road, the new powertrain provides smoother, quieter and more comfortable operation, with better acceleration. Zero-to-60 acceleration improves by a full three seconds to 13.5 seconds, respectable for a truck that is an off-road performer without peer.
At the same time, fuel economy of the H1 also improves. Preliminary testing indicates significantly improved fuel economy. A revised fuel system also increases capacity of the H1’s two on-board tanks to 51.5 gallons, 9.5 gallons more than previous H1s. The increased tank capacity combines with the efficiency of the Duramax to raise cruising range from 400 miles to an estimated 570 miles between fill-ups.
The Allison 1000 transmission is an important aspect of the H1 Alpha’s comprehensive performance improvements. This five-speed automatic from Allison Transmission is extremely stout and durable as it is utilized in medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks. The Allison 1000 features a Tow/Haul mode that adjusts shift patterns for optimal performance when the vehicle is towing or carrying heavy loads. The Allison unit aids the H1 in severe maneuvers with features such as improved drivetrain braking and a crawl ratio of 45:1, an increase of 22 percent.
With the improved power and efficiency of the H1 Alpha comes an increase in towing capacity. Gross Combined Weight Rating (the sum of vehicle, maximum cargo and towing capacities) increases 2,000 pounds, to 17,300 pounds.
Several other areas of the H1 Alpha also have been enhanced, in addition to the drivetrain. Brake rotors are larger, going from 10.7 inches to 12 inches in diameter. The half-shafts on each axle and the steering gear have all been bolstered to better manage the Alpha’s increased capabilities. One of the H1’s unique suspension features from its outset are the geared hubs at each wheel that contribute to the truck’s incredible crawling and climbing ability. These have been redesigned for the H1 Alpha and feature a helical-cut gear set. This new design improves gear engagement, which reduces both the noise and rocking motion during deceleration and stopping maneuvers.
To accommodate the new dimensions of the Duramax 6600 and Allison 1000, the body of the H1 Alpha is positioned 2 inches higher than the previous H1. This provides slightly more clearance for the body panels from the wheels and from potential obstacles on trails.
Alpha is about performance, more than style. However, there are a few visual enhancements to the H1 Alpha. The new Alpha shield logo appears on a badge just above the rear bumper. A Duramax badge adorns the front driver’s side corner of the body, surrounded by a redesigned brush guard. The wheels have also been freshened, featuring a new, brighter finish.
On the inside, the H1 Alpha features the new interior that debuted on the 2004 H1. Those improvements included aniline leather seats, revised controls, and more luxurious surfaces throughout.

Hummer H3 Dakar Rally Prototype

Hummer H3 Dakar Rally Prototype for Jeff Gordon 2006 review: DETROIT -- HUMMER Division and Robby Gordon Motorsports have joined together to take on the Dakar Rally, widely considered to be the most grueling off-road race in the world due to its brutal terrain and extreme environmental conditions. Gordon will lead his Team Dakar USA from behind the wheel of a HUMMER H3 race truck. His relationship with HUMMER will also include driving an H3 in the 2006 Baja 1000 and Baja 500 desert races.“Team Dakar USA’s main objective will be to prove to the world that American innovation and determination can compete on the world stage,” said Gordon. “We started planning for this just after my first Dakar Rally, where we won two stages, and I know we are prepared and ready to take on the world.”

Hummer H3 (New)

New Hummer H3 : DETROIT – The next chapter of the growing HUMMER legacy, the 2006 H3 delivers authentic HUMMER style and off-road capability in a more accessible midsize package. Just as its legendary H1 and H2 siblings did in the full-size segment, the H3 will create a new leader in off-road capability among midsize sport utilities when it arrives at dealers in spring 2005. “H3’s arrival establishes an extraordinary new presence in the previously ordinary world of midsize SUVs,” said Susan Docherty, HUMMER general manager. “HUMMER has developed a passionate following because of its unmatched style and capability, and the H3 extends that appeal by making the brand accessible to a broader range of potential owners.”

H3 packs uncompromising HUMMER style and capability into its midsize dimensions. Compared to the H2, the H3 is 16.9 inches shorter in length, 6 inches shorter in height and 6.5 inches narrower. Roughly the same length as a midsize family sedan, H3 comfortably navigates city traffic and delivers HUMMER’s trademark incredible crawling and climbing capability.
Powered by the Vortec 3500 engine with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing, the H3 features a combination of power and greatly improved fuel economy. H3 is projected to reach peak fuel economy of up to 20 miles per gallon. H3 will be the first HUMMER to offer the choice of a manual or an automatic transmission, as many off-road enthusiasts value the ultimate control of a manual.
The H3 was engineered for off-road leadership among midsize SUVs. The heart of the truck’s capability is its electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system. That system is augmented with features such as a fully locking rear differential, traction control, underbody shielding and GM’s StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancement system. H3 offers two tire packages, a Goodyear 32-inch all-terrain tire and Bridgestone 33-inch, both larger than any other midsize SUV.
In addition to its uncompromised off-road capabilities, the H3 also provides the refinement, comfort and convenience required for enjoyable on-road driving. It offers premium options such as heated leather seats, a large electric sliding sunroof, XM satellite radio and numerous customized accessories.
The H3 represents a significant step in the HUMMER brand’s rapid growth, and an important product for its new network of dealers. It joins the H1, the cornerstone HUMMER that was based on the legendary military vehicle; the H2 SUV, the more modern and civilized full-size HUMMER; and the H2 SUT launched in 2004 that features an innovative reconfigurable cargo bed.
Capable
Specifically designed as a truck engine, the Vortec 3500 is a 3.5L inline five-cylinder offering an excellent combination of power and efficiency. The engine delivers 220 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 225 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm. In terms of performance, the Vortec 3500 provides the H3 with excellent power and control for off-roading, with comfortable and capable on-road characteristics, including acceleration that equals the V-8 powered H2 in most driving conditions. The Vortec 3500 brings premium features and advanced technologies – including dual overhead cams, variable valve timing, electronic throttle control and low mass. The engine also features unique counter-rotating balance shafts to help minimize noise, vibration and harshness.
The Vortec 3500 is available in the H3 with either a standard, smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission or a Hydra-Matic 4L60-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. The automatic transmission includes shift modes specific to low-range operation, which, combined with speed-based throttle progressions, help optimize driveability in low-range, off-highway operation.
The H3 also has a standard new Borg-Warner two-speed electrically controlled full-time four-wheel-drive system with a 2.64:1 ratio low-range gear reduction for highly controlled off-road obstacle climbing. An optional version provides aggressive low range gearing – a 4.03:1 ratio – for ultimate obstacle-climbing control.
Both versions provide the choice of operating modes: 4High-range Open, for optimum highway performance and comfort under normal road conditions 4High-range Locked, which allows torque to be transferred to the front or rear wheels as needed 4Low-range Locked, for severe off-pavement use, such as crawling over large rocks or logs, or deep sand or snow 4Low-range Locked plus driver-selectable electronic rear differential locked, with the optional 4.03:1 low-range transfer case gearing, providing crawling and climbing power every bit as capable as the legendary H1 and H2 Neutral, for flat-towing the H3
H3’s more maneuverable size provides advantages, such as a 37-ft. turning circle and 9.1-inch ground clearance, which contribute to maximum breakover angle of 25 degrees (with 33-inch tires). Serious off-road performance is also aided by the maximum approach angle of 40 degrees and maximum departure angle of 37 degrees. These approach and departure angles permit the H3 to drive right into a hole and back out again, without getting hung up in front or rear .
Among its off-road capabilities, the H3 can ford 16 inches of water at 20 mph or 24-inch streams at a 5-mph pace, climb 16-inch vertical steps and rocks, make its way through deep sand and race over sandy surfaces.
Control
H3 provides a surprisingly smooth, comfortable ride, along with the responsive handling and braking control that customers want for daily driving. Key chassis features that contribute to this combination of smoothness and control, both on- and off-road, include:A fully welded ladder-type frame, with a modular, three-piece design that incorporates fully boxed components for outstanding strength and stiffness. An independent front SLA torsion bar suspension and “Hotchkiss” design multi-leaf, semi-elliptic, dual stage leaf spring rear suspension. The standard suspension provides excellent on-highway comfort and outstanding off-road capability, while the optional Off-Road Adventure package delivers more extreme off-road capability. Underbody protection that includes four standard protective shields, including the front skid plate; an oil pan skid plate that also protects the front axle; and a transfer case shield and a fuel tank shield. Additional protection is also available from optional chassis-bolted rocker panel protectors.A highly sophisticated standard power rack-and-pinion steering system, with a three-bushing design and a 17:1 ratio that contributes to a very maneuverable 37-foot curb-to-curb turning circle.Electro-hydraulic four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Dynamic Rear Proportioning, for quick, controlled stops.Standard single-wheel, full-function traction control that uses a combination of engine intervention and brake management to allow as many as three wheels on a slippery surface and still provide impressive traction capability. It also interacts with the transfer case to provide additional off-road operating modes. StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancement system, which enhances safety, stability and control on all roads.
Iconic Style
HUMMER design is iconic. H3’s daring looks make it readily identifiable as a HUMMER. It’s a matter of form following function. Features like its wide track width, short overhangs and huge tires provide stability, outstanding ground clearance and quick rock-climbing capability in off-road driving.
The H3’s flat, chiseled surfaces; upright windshield and windows; signature seven-slot louvered grille; round headlamps housed inside square openings; and pronounced fender flares are all pure HUMMER. Power and strength emanate from its cube-like metal billet form.
Large tires are a staple of HUMMER style, clearly signaling the trucks’ capability. H3’s 32- and 33-inch tires carry that family trait strongly. Six-lug 16-by-7.5-inch aluminum wheels are standard, with chrome wheels available.
The large rear swing gate encompasses fixed glass, standard rear wiper, defogger and full-size spare tire. The swing gate-mounted spare, a HUMMER first, enhances interior cargo room.
Among other exterior design highlights are a highly protective aluminum front skid plate; hefty, stamped-steel front and rear bumper bars; a composite front fascia, with “HUMMER” molded into the driver’s side; standard front tow hooks; and a welded-on rear bumper recovery hook.
Comfortable, convenient
The H3’s interior is inviting and modern, blending premium cues with world-class craftsmanship. Upscale touches include a perforated, leather-wrapped and stitched steering wheel and automatic transmission shift handle; bright-accented instrumentation; brushed, machine-finished trim plates; chrome door release handles; chrome bezel for the automatic transmission shifter; and a chrome H3 emblem in the center of the steering wheel.
Sporty front bucket seats and 60/40 split rear seats, with foam inserts and soft bolsters, provide both comfort and good off-road operating support. They are available in standard cloth and optional leather.
The instrument panel is positioned to ensure an optimal view of the road, with easy-to-read liquid crystal displays and a driver information center in the center of the cluster. A center stack includes four levels of controls arranged horizontally for easy use.
Four audio systems are available, all compatible with GM’s OnStar system and optional XM Satellite Radio. They include an optional touch-screen DVD-based Navigation Radio (late availability), with a 6.5-inch screen, separate DVD and CD slots, Radio Data System capability and navigation map database.
A large, 36.1-by-24.6-inch power sunroof is available and includes easy-to-operate “express” opening and closing functions, with anti-pinch safety protection.
Some additional standard electronic features include power windows and door locks with lockout protection; electric rear window defogger; outside power-adjustable manually folding rearview mirrors; self-dimming “electrochromic” inside rearview mirror with compass and outside temperature indicator; and three 12-volt, covered auxiliary power outlets (two in front, one in the cargo area).
Safety and security
HUMMER owners value the inherent strength and feeling of security their trucks exude. The H3 fulfills that promise with available features such as StabiliTrak vehicle stability control, roof rail-mounted side curtain air bags, rollover protection system, tire pressure monitoring and stout vehicle structure projected to earn five-star safety ratings for both the driver and passenger in front and side impacts.
The H3 incorporates structural enhancements designed to help in crash protection as well as a number of advanced safety systems to assist in both crash avoidance and protection.
A reinforced passenger compartment safety cage helps provide protection against side and front impacts. The strong, rigid steel structure surrounds the passenger compartment, runs from the A-pillars to the roof rail, back to the D-pillars and includes the bottom rocker panels, under-floor longitudinals and frame. The all-steel body panels and exceptionally strong frame further protect occupants in a collision. The fully welded, ladder-type frame optimizes crash performance, in addition to standing up to rigorous off-road requirements.
Additional crash protection is provided by a standard frontal dual-stage air bag system. The H3 has GM’s Passenger Sensing System, which uses weight-sensing technology to turn the front passenger air bag on or off as appropriate. If the sensor system detects an unoccupied front passenger seat or the presence of a smaller occupant, the front passenger air bag is designed to automatically turn off so it would not deploy in the event of a frontal collision. Even with this system, GM strongly recommends to restrain child passengers in an appropriate child seat placed in the second or third row of the vehicle.
Optional roof-rail-mounted, side curtain air bags drop all the way down to the belt line to help provide head and rollover protection for the driver and front passenger. A rollover protection sensing system also helps protect occupants against impending rollovers by triggering side curtain air bags to increase the likelihood of occupant containment in a rollover event, and seat belt pre-tensioners to reduce the likelihood of occupant contact with the inside of the vehicle. H3 will feature the new sixth-generation OnStar hardware with digital and analog coverage. OnStar’s Gen 6 hardware includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar features core safety services and Personal Calling that allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls. Some of the other standard safety and security features on the H3 include daytime running lamps, a PASSLock II anti-theft vehicle security system, remote keyless entry, battery rundown protection and an electronic tire pressure monitoring system

Hummer H2 SUT

Hummer H2 Sport Utility Truck (SUT) : The HUMVEE is the original HUMMER, the cornerstone of the brand. In 2003, HUMMER introduced H2, reflecting an evolution of the brand and making HUMMER more accessible to a wider audience. For 2005, the HUMMER brand continues to evolve, thanks to the H2 SUT – a vehicle with unmatched capabilities, and still every inch a HUMMER.“Like its brother the H2 SUV, the SUT draws from its military heritage as the next evolution of the HUMMER brand. The H2 SUT is functional, versatile and almost endlessly reconfigurable, exceeding even the most demanding consumer’s standards,” said Michael C. DiGiovanni, HUMMER general manager.
HUMMER is the king of the mountain for off-road vehicles. The SUT, like the H2 SUV, has unbelievable, class-leading, off-road capability. This truck is untamed and built for individuals with a rugged spirit because it can go anywhere and do anything.
“While the SUT certainly carries on the traditions of its predecessors, it has a level of unique design, functionality and capability that offers owners a sense of freedom that appeals to their youthful, active lifestyles,” added DiGiovanni.
Absolute versatility
H2 owners can already carry passengers, cargo or a combination of the two. With SUT, HUMMER adds even more flexibility.
When SUT owners have to carry four passengers, the bulkhead at the rear of the passenger compartment remains upright, still providing over 30 cubic feet of cargo-carrying capacity.
However, when cargo requirements dictate the need for more space, the rear window can be powered into the Midgate, and the Midgate and the rear seat folded forward, offering a 4-foot by 6-foot pickup bed.
Rubber bed mats help keep the cargo area clean, while a locking hard tonneau cover provides cargo security. Both accessories may be ordered individually, as may bed rail cover inserts and a removable, locking cargo box. SUT owners may also customize their vehicle with a host of other GM accessories.
“There’s more to the H2 SUT than merely cargo-carrying capacity. At the push of a single button, the driver can lower all four side windows and the rear window. Using a separate switch, the standard sunroof can also be opened, giving SUT a truly open-air feeling, like driving a convertible,” explained Roger McCormack, HUMMER product director.
H2 SUT’s interior is as inviting as it is innovative. It features Medium Wheat leather seats standard, or an uplevel Ebony leather interior is available. Either leather-seating configuration features eight-way driver’s and front-passenger seats, four-way lumbar supports and memory settings for two drivers. Both front seats also feature three heat settings for the seat cushions and seatbacks. Heated seat cushions for the rear passengers are included with either leather package.
The uplevel interior features an all-black appearance throughout. Perforated leather is used on the instrument panel and the door trim grab handles. Leather is also used to cover the console lid, the door trim armrests and the door trim surround.
“To truly accentuate the Ebony leather interior we’ve given the door sill plates an aluminum appearance, complementing the chrome appearance of the aircraft-style shifter,” McCormack added.
The metallic look is also incorporated into the inside door handle, which features a chrome finish. The result is an interior that epitomizes luxury and precision.
Ask for directions? Never!
The beauty of a vehicle such as the HUMMER H2 SUT is the ability to go pretty much anywhere. And if the driver is unsure how to “get there” – well, it’s not a problem, thanks to the available touch-screen Navigation Radio. With the push of a button, the navigation operation will instantly map routes with 2-D and 3-D full-color map views on a 5.8-inch display screen, making maneuvering on highways and streets effortless. Once the navigation DVD is inserted and the address entered on the system’s screen, a route map is generated and audio commands – with step-by-step instructions in English or French – are provided.
The verbal commands tell drivers when to turn and alert them if they stray from the calculated route; the system automatically recalculates a new route from their current position if they make a wrong turn. Additionally, drivers can instruct the navigation system to plan a route using the shortest path or one using major roads. Coupled with the standard OnStar system, the navigation system provides additional security to drivers.
Providing uninterrupted listening pleasure while going “from here to there” is the available XM Satellite Radio, featuring 100 coast-to-coast, digital-quality channels of original music, news, sports and talk. Many of the channels are presented commercial-free. Consumers can subscribe to the basic service for $9.99 a month – less than the cost of a single CD.
Every inch a HUMMER
H2 SUT’s exterior is as rugged as its interior is refined. The HUMMER DNA is quickly evident from the exterior design of the SUT, embodying square shapes; flat, chiseled surfaces; hard peak lines; and flat glass panes. These combine to create a significant amount of interior room. The vertical glass opens up a broader front and wider side view.
In a nod to the functional aspect of design, exposed components – such as hood lift handles, hood latches and fasteners – give H2 SUT’s appearance an individually component-assembled quality. Exposed components shout ruggedness and exemplify yeoman-like functionality and workmanship.
The rear bumper also includes large, military, HUMMER-style retrieval loops; the front bumper includes tow loops. Both bumpers have access holes for the hitch receivers attached to the chassis that can accommodate a winch, which can be plugged in, locked (just like a trailer hitch) and hooked up with an electrical connection, allowing H2 SUT to free vehicles mired in mud or otherwise hopelessly grounded.
Both receivers accommodate a regular Class 3 trailer hitch, providing additional flexibility for such tasks as pulling a boat out of the water or backing a trailer into a tight spot.
Because it is based on the H2 SUV, the SUT enjoys short overhangs, for radical approach and departure angles and exceptional ground clearance for minimal impact on trails. The 17-inch wheels and heavy-duty independent front suspension and five-link rear suspension provide superior handling, carrying and towing capability.
Powering the H2 SUT is GM’s 6.0-liter, Vortec 6000 V-8, which delivers 325 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 365 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. The Vortec 6000 is mounted longitudinally and mated to a heavy-duty Hydra-Matic 4L65-E four-speed automatic overdrive transmission with full-time all-wheel drive. “Exceptional off-road capability and versatility in the SUT allows HUMMER owners the ultimate opportunity for adventure,” said McCormack.
Concept to reality
“We first introduced the H2 SUT as a concept vehicle in Times Square with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mayor Rudy Giuliani during the 2001 New York Auto Show,” said McCormack.
The H2 SUT will be built at the AM General assembly facility in Mishawaka, Ind., by the United Auto Workers Local 5, the oldest UAW local union in the country. The H2 SUT will go on sale in the second quarter of 2004.
General Motors and AM General reached an agreement in December 1999, in which GM acquired exclusive ownership of the HUMMER brand name worldwide. To find out more about HUMMER, visit the web site at

“Capable” and “HUMMER” are synonymous. After all, how many other vehicles can ford a stream 20 or 30 inches deep (H2 and H1, respectively) or climb 16-inch vertical steps? H2 SUT is all of that, of course, while also adding a higher level of versatility and fun to any excursion.
“The reconfiguration aspect of the H2 SUT greatly enhances its versatility. SUT can be a fun and luxurious family hauler, a practical truck or a little of both. And because it’s a HUMMER, it can traverse the toughest terrain easily and comfortably,” said Michael C. DiGiovanni, HUMMER general manager.
Capable = Versatile
H2 SUT can comfortably accommodate up to five people. It also has 60/40 folding rear seats, allowing drivers to conveniently carry a combination of passengers and cargo inside the vehicle. Where SUT really shines, however, is during those times when cargo requirements increase.
“The SUT features an open-back cargo bed. The open feature means that tall items can be more easily transported,” explained Roger McCormack, HUMMER product director. “What’s more is that the cargo area is expandable.”
With the Midgate closed, the SUT offers more than 30 cubic feet of space inside the cab. When even larger items must be accommodated, SUT is up to the challenge.
“Extending cargo-carrying capacity is a very simple process in the SUT. Fold the rear seats and fold the Midgate, and you have a 4-foot by 6-foot cargo bed and you increase your cargo-carrying capacity to more than 52 cubic feet,” said McCormack.
For securing cargo, the bed has four tie-down provisions, each capable of holding 500 pounds. Cargo security, meanwhile, can be ensured with the available locking hard tonneau cover or the locking cargo box.
“We envision SUT owners will take their vehicle off-road, maybe camping or mountain biking. For easy cleanup once back home, the SUT features cargo bed drain holes and rubber bed mats, allowing owners to clean the cargo area with a garden hose,” McCormack said.
Another feature that will likely come in handy during such excursions is the SUT’s optional air suspension. In addition to improving ride quality and increasing ground clearance, the air suspension adds an auxiliary air outlet in the cargo area, allowing owners to inflate tires, camping equipment, beach toys or what have you.
Capable = Powerful
When it comes to performance, the H2 SUT is unmatched. Its 6.0-liter, Vortec 6000 V-8 delivers 325 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 365 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. The Vortec 6000 is mounted longitudinally and mated to a heavy-duty Hydra-Matic 4L65-E four-speed automatic overdrive transmission with full-time four-wheel drive.
The four-wheel-drive system is perhaps the most advanced ever offered on a consumer vehicle. With its five operational modes and two-speed planetary gearset, the SUT is capable of adapting to many different road conditions at the touch of a button. Selections include:4 HI Open for normal, everyday driving on dry road surfaces at any speeds. 4 HI Locked for semi-slippery surfaces like snow, light sand or wet areas, such as those around a boat launch. 4 LO Locked for severe off-pavement use, such as crawling over large rocks or logs. 4 LO Locked + Rear Diff Locked, available only when the transfer case is in Low Lock position. It permits locking up the rear differential for optimum slow-speed capability in climbing over large rocks or up long, steep grades. Neutral, obtained by simultaneously pressing the “4 LO Locked” and “4 HI Open” buttons and holding them down for 10 seconds. It permits flat-towing the H2 SUT behind another vehicle.
Adding to the overall sense of control is a highly developed Bosch four-channel anti-lock braking/traction control system (ABS/TCS). In addition to providing optimum control on slippery surfaces, the ABS can detect and adjust its braking capabilities to rough off-road surfaces, such as gravel and potholes.
The TCS also provides the ability to gain traction through a single wheel, if necessary. A second mode of the TCS system, “TC2,” used in conjunction with the transfer case’s selections, provides three additional operating modes: “4 HI Locked + TC2,” “4 LO Locked + TC2” and “4 LO Locked + Rear Diff Locked + TC2.” This provides distinct advantages in different driving conditions, such as loose sand or gravel in the desert or mud or slippery conditions. With three transfer case selections, two rear axle differential selections and two modes provided by the TCS mode switch, the driver actually has a total of seven driving mode selections, providing unprecedented versatility to tailor H2 performance to match driving conditions.
On and off road, SUT drivers will appreciate the independent torsion bar front suspension, which features 46-mm monotube gas-charged shock absorbers and a 36-mm front stabilizer bar.
The rear suspension, meanwhile, features a five-link trailing arm, air springs and a 32-mm stabilizer bar. The spring rate is variable, from a soft on-road rate, to a transitional rate, to a stiff off-road rate, which helps prevent bump impact input forces from entering the vehicle’s body. A coil spring version will be available in June 2004.
The result is smooth cornering on pavement and a less jarring ride off road. The standard air suspension also aids the off-road capability of the SUT. It helps keep the vehicle level under load and, with its extended ride height feature, makes for a steeper departure angle when conditions call for it.
SUT INTERIOR IS VERSATILE, ACCOMMODATING AND LUXURIOUS
H2 SUT is like a multipurpose tool. It can seat up to five people very comfortably, hold more than 52 cubic feet of cargo, or a combination of the two.
When SUT owners have to carry four additional passengers, the Midgate at the rear of the passenger compartment remains upright, still providing more than 30 cubic feet of cargo-carrying capacity. Or, at the driver’s discretion, some cargo may be carried inside the vehicle, thanks to the folding 60/40 rear seats.
However, when cargo requirements dictate even more space, the rear window can be powered into the Midgate and the rear seats and Midgate can be folded forward, revealing a nearly flat load floor and 52.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Cargo capacity is maximized by the single-pivot, swing-out spare tire carrier, providing an unencumbered loading area.
The cargo bed features four tie-down provisions, each capable of holding 500 pounds. Since the SUT features an air suspension, there is an auxiliary air outlet in the cargo area, enabling SUT owners to inflate tires, camping equipment, beach toys, etc.
Items that are likely to get dirty or muddy – such as the available HUMMER bike – are ideally suited for the cargo compartment, since the bed is easily cleaned with a hose and designed to drain quickly.
“HUMMER owners are rugged individualists. These are people who are likely to take their vehicles off-road or to engage in outdoor activities. We’ve also designed a number of accessories for SUT owners to customize their trucks to match their lifestyles,” said Roger McCormack, HUMMER product director.
These accessories include rubber bed mats; a locking hard tonneau cover for cargo security; and a locking cargo box. SUT owners may also customize their vehicle with a host of GM accessories.
“Another innovative feature of the SUT is the way it creates the feeling of a convertible. We think it will be a popular aspect of this vehicle’s ownership,” McCormack added.
At the push of a single button, the driver can lower all four side windows and the rear window. Using a separate switch, the standard sunroof can also be opened, giving SUT a truly open-air feeling.
